AI + Space + Robotics

An eight-week Mars mission for curious young minds. Design a Mars rover, train an AI image classifier and put your ideas to the test. Through hands-on challenges inspired by NASA’s Mars education resources, students explore how robots sense their surroundings, how AI learns from examples, and why human judgement matters.

What we will learn

Design a Mars mission

Build and code a rover

Build and code a rover

Explore the challenges of travelling to and working on Mars, then develop ideas with your mission team.

Say something interesting about your business here.Use micro:bit-powered robots to explore sensing, movement and step-by-step instructions.

Train and test AI

Present the evidence

Present the evidence

Train a computer to distinguish between classroom sample objects, then investigate what happens with unfamiliar images.

Present the evidence

Present the evidence

Present the evidence

Demonstrate your mission, explain your results and show where people need to check the AI’s decisions.

Learning Journey

Explore & plan

Discover Mars, investigate mission challenges and develop a team plan.

Build & program

Explore how a rover senses and moves through hands-on robotics challenges.

Train & investigate

Create an image classifier, test new examples and examine mistakes.

Evaluate & showcase

Bring the mission together, document the evidence and present a final team demonstration.

A project they can explain—not just demonstrate

By the end of the program, students will have contributed to a team rover mission, trained and tested an image classifier, and recorded evidence of how their system performed.

  • A team rover demonstration
  • An AI testing record and model card
  • A final mission presentation

Can your AI be trusted with a Mars mission?

A confident prediction is not always a correct one. Students investigate how training examples, backgrounds and unfamiliar objects can affect an AI model’s results. They learn to test fairly, keep records and decide when a person needs to step in.

Along the way, they practise coding, scientific reasoning, teamwork and explaining ideas with evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@aicamp.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No previous robotics experience is required. Activities include guided steps, with additional challenges for students ready to explore further.

Students work in small teams, sharing equipment and contributing through coding, testing, recording and presenting.

The AI image model runs on a computer. Students interpret its output, check the object and guide the rover through a supervised task.

This is an independently developed AICAMP course inspired by NASA’s publicly available Mars education resources.
